Q&A
- How did you start with photo/video?
I started taking photos as a kid using my father´s Welta camera. First it was a hobby, I shot friends, sport, school activities and developed my black and white film by myself. Besides the creative aspect, photography also fed my fascination with technology and gear. This led to buying my own Pentacon camera and later on to starting a job working at a minilab. This is where my photos got noticed and I started getting offers for commercial shoots. I started working as a photographer shooting for various magazines and making a lot of motion picture photography - documenting Czech and Slovak movie shoots, which I enjoy until this day. - How would you describe your style?
It is not possible to describe one style, I always like to accomodate my work to the given project. But the common denominator in all my work is technical precison and good lighting where for me good photography starts. That is also the reason why I always prefered bigger formats and invested in my equipment. Everything else needs to be customized to the assignment. - What inspires you?
Photographers who were or are much better at the job than me like Richard Avedon, Peter Lindbergh and Josef Sudek. I also find great inspiration outdoor in the landscapes and clouds and I spend a lot of time walking around searching for it. - What is your dream shoot or project?
Photography is my dream job, therefore I am working on my dream project on daily basis. Every new project brings a challenge and that is what I love about it. If I had to pick a specific dream shoot, even if not very realistic, it would be portraits of veteran actors like JP Belmondo. I love the moment when I manage to capture the look in a someone´s eyes exactly the way I see that person. - What is your best advice to others that want to develop as photographers?
Success in photography is about the right moment. You can´t rush it, you have to wait for it. Train your technical skills and be ready.
What is in your bag?
- What is the most important in your bag?
I have the most important element with me all the time = my brain. The other one, which I can carry with me is a good camera.
- What bag do you use?
I use a Think Tank bag and backpack.
