1. Lighting

2021-04-06

One of the essential things in filmmaking is lighting. If you control your lighting, you will get a powerful image. In situations where the natural light might be too weak, or if your face is in shadow because of the sun, external lighting is a great option.

Lume Cube

Lume Cube Air is a small, compact light that is quite powerful relative to its size. It's also waterproof, down to 10 meters. It has a magnet on the back and a 1/4"-thread at the bottom, making it easy to mount on all kinds of stuff.

The Lume Cube is an excellent light for a small, compact setup, and best of all — it fits in your pocket. It's not much bigger than the size of your palm. It has a micro USB port for charging and holds a lot of power. With the included modifiers, you can diffuse your light for a softer feel and gel the light to match your surrounding color temperature.

Besides being magnetic on the back, the Lume Cube is also Bluetooth enabled. You can power the lights and control the flash and power output, all through your phone. When you do mobile filmmaking, you want something light and compact. The Lume Cube is an excellent solution to this.

Halo14 from Nanlite

Halo14 from Nanlite is a LED ring light. It creates beautiful rings of light in the iris of the model and is used widely in vlogging and make-up tutorials. You don't get any shadows on your face with a ring light. It comes with a few mounting options — you can place your phone in the middle of the light, or use the included mirror and place your phone on the side — perhaps with a Gorillapod? The Halo14 has a color temperature from 2700K to 6500K, giving you the flexibility to have either a warm or cool light temperature.

When you're filming with your phone, it can quickly run out of battery. The Halo14 solves this by having a USB port on the light itself so that you can plug in USB power, and the power to the light comes from your wall-mounted socket.

The Halo14 is also great to use as a regular light. It's great for food photography, product photography, or lifestyle photography. Just mount your phone in the grip, and you will get professional results with this light setup.
